Overview

The school is gearing up to welcome a new incoming class and would like to help them adjust to campus life.

Problem

How can we help incoming RIT students navigate through a new campus experience?

Solution

A mobile app that provides a unified platform to the educational institutes that helps the students adjust better to the campus life by seeking advice, tracking their check-lists and making new connections.

Key features

Sign up process

New users can quickly sign up, and the onboarding will help them understand all app features.

Build connections

After signing up, the users can build a college network through connecting with current students.

Writing posts

The Paw Wall mirrors a social media like pattern to post questions and advice amongst peers.

Tracking tasks

Students can also view their check-lists to insure one does not miss out of any required tasks.

Design process

Who am I designing the application for?

Students of Rochester Institute of Technology

  • Incoming students, International or domestic, face difficulties in adjusting to campus life.

  • Need to cross the barrier of seeking advice from seniors and build a new  network.

  • Students have their own set of questions to be answered.

Why a mobile application?

  • 95% of students own a laptop or a smartphone.

  • Mobile technology's high ownership has translated into increased usage to support student learning.

  • Most powerful and portable tool at our disposal.

Understanding the user

I conducted interviews to understand the user behavior and needs.

I interviewed 2 current RIT students,  2 incoming students and the director of International Student Services at RIT to understand  the user journey better.

Interview Statements -

  • Not aware of the available resources

  • Not enough information about the eating options available on campus

  • Do not have a clear check-list for designated tasks

  • Have to resort to Whatsapp/Facebook groups for making connections.

  • Not aware of the reliable ways of finding housing

  • Figuring out campus commute system

Affinity mapping

Through Affinity Mapping, I discovered the embedded patterns and clustered the information into 3 focus points.

  • Creating a network - No communication platform between the students

  • Ask questions - Difficult to find help with non-academic chores

  • Orientation Tasks - Lack of information about orientation processes

Future consideration

  • Google Integration - An improved map layout for RIT campus that highlights the key features of RIT.

  • RIT uses G suite as its workspace and a lot of other google services can be integrated in this product for possible scenarios like scheduling meetings, making announcements etc.

  • The check-lists can be transferred to Google Keep.
